Morocco and Spain to Relaunch Underwater Railway Tunnel Project

High-Level Meeting Brings Resolution to Long-Awaited Project

After a high-level bilateral meeting between Spain and Morocco in February 2023, the Moroccan and Spanish governments have resolved to relaunch the construction of an underwater railway tunnel connecting the two countries. The project, known as the Afrotunnel, has been in discussion for several years, but its progress has been hindered by political and financial challenges.

Details of the Relaunched Project

The Afrotunnel is a 38-kilometer-long tunnel that will connect Tarifa in Spain to Tangier in Morocco, passing beneath the Strait of Gibraltar. The tunnel is designed to accommodate both passenger and freight trains, and is expected to significantly reduce travel times and improve connectivity between the two countries.

Economic and Strategic Benefits

The relaunch of the Afrotunnel project is seen as a major economic and strategic initiative for both Morocco and Spain. The project is expected to boost trade and tourism, as well as create thousands of jobs during its construction and operation phases. In addition, the tunnel will provide a crucial link between Europe and Africa, facilitating the flow of goods and services between the two continents.
