Italy stun Croatia with late goal to reach last 16
Margin of error small at Euro 2024
The heartbreakingly fine margins between success and failure were written across the face of Luka Modric on day 11 of Euro 2024 as Italy broke Croatia's hearts with a late equaliser that ensures the defending champions a place in the last 16.
Added-time snatch
An added-time goal from Mattia Zaccagni snatched a 1-1 draw with Croatia which was enough to see Roberto Mancini's men join hosts Germany in the knockout stages from Group B with a game to spare. The match looked to be heading for a stalemate after Nikola Vlasic gave Croatia a deserved lead midway through the second half. But Italy, who needed to avoid defeat to reach the last 16, showed the resilience that was a hallmark of their Euro 2020 success by snatching a leveller in the 94th minute.
Zaccagni, who had only been on the pitch for a few minutes, was the unlikely hero as he turned in a cross from substitute Nicolo Zaniolo.
