Launch Details

At 2:54 p.m. EDT / 22:54 UTC on Thursday, May 19, Boeing’s spacecraft launched aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

Starliner is the result of Boeing’s efforts to develop a spacecraft to rival SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule. The spacecraft is designed to carry up to seven astronauts to and from the International Space Station.

This is Starliner’s second launch attempt. The first attempt, in December 2019, was scrubbed due to a software issue. Boeing has since made a number of changes to the spacecraft’s software and hardware, and the company is confident that this launch attempt will be successful.

Mission Objectives

The primary objective of this mission is to test Starliner’s ability to safely carry astronauts to and from the International Space Station. The spacecraft will also perform a number of other tasks, including:

  • Docking with the International Space Station
  • Performing a series of maneuvers
  • Returning to Earth and landing in the Pacific Ocean

The success of this mission will be a major milestone for Boeing and NASA. It will also pave the way for Starliner to begin carrying astronauts to and from the International Space Station on a regular basis.
