Andreeva Stuns Sabalenka in Madrid Opener

Sabalenka's Title Defense Ends Prematurely

Russian Teenager Scores Upset Victory

Erika Andreeva pulled off a stunning upset at the 2024 Mutua Madrid Open, defeating world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka 6-1 6-2 in the first round. Andreeva, just 17 years old, played fearlessly, hitting winners from all over the court and breaking Sabalenka's serve five times.

Sabalenka, the defending champion in Madrid, was unable to find her rhythm and struggled with her serve throughout the match. The Belarusian was also hampered by a right shoulder injury, which she has been carrying since the US Open.

Andreeva's victory is undoubtedly one of the biggest upsets of the year. The Russian teenager has been making waves on the WTA Tour this season, reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and the semifinals of the Miami Open.

With this win, Andreeva has sent a clear message that she is a force to be reckoned with and is one to watch at the upcoming Roland Garros. The French Open begins later this month and Andreeva will be hoping to continue her impressive run of form.
